Founders’ Friday: Leo Falkenstein, Consume Media

Today’s Founders’ Friday highlights the success of Leo Falkenstein and Consume Media! Read on to learn more about this video production company that is making it big in the Athens music scene.

RC: Tell me a little bit about your company.

LF: It is called Consume Media. We do video production for a lot of the local bands. We also have events at which we host bands, and we are trying to get into promotion for the bands as well.

RC: What was your inspiration?

LF: My partner Michael and I were looking for an internship last summer and the process was terrible. We started a video production company and didn’t have a niche until five or six months into the process. Once we realized what Athens had to offer through the music scene, we decided music was the route to go. Music is something we are both passionate about. Having the right interests in the right town worked out.

RC: What has been the biggest challenge so far?

LF: Getting our name out there. It took us about six months before anybody actually wanted to work with us. We had to beg people to work with us for a while since we didn’t have a portfolio or anything to show people. Now we have a lot of bands working with us as well as a lot of people promoting us. People send us business without us having to do much anymore.

RC: Which band have you enjoyed working with the most?

LF: The biggest name we’ve filmed is Perpetual Group. We also filmed Mac Miller and Yacht Rock Revue. But I actually like working with the smaller bands more. They’re not at the level of the bigger bands yet, but we are trying to help them get there. Some of the smaller bands are Mama’s Love and Sumilan. Those are two of my favorites.

RC: What has been the best part of the process?

LF: I love it when people tell me that they’ve heard of Consume Media. It is fulfilling when somebody I don’t know likes what I do and enjoys our work.

RC: What is the most valuable lesson you have learned from starting a company?

LF: You’re going to make a lot of mistakes and everything always takes longer than you think it will.

RC: What past experience do you think has helped with founding your own company?

LF: My passion for music definitely helped me found the company. I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and have always wanted to do my own thing. I don’t like joining onto things.

RC: Where do you hope to see your company a year from now?

LF: I hope to keep growing quickly. Hopefully, a year from now we will be into managing bands as well. We hope to maintain our Athens music video domination. I never thought I would be starting my own company before I got out of college but I like knowing that I have something to work for. I graduate college a year from now, and I would like to be able to make a steady income from this company.

RC: What advice would you give others wanting to start their own company?

LF: Start now. Don’t wait because if you do it is not going to happen. It is something you have to work at every single day.

RC: Has Athens helped build your company?

LF: Athens is a very unique city. We have one of the largest music scenes in the country. Not many people know that. Fortunately for us there is nobody in Athens doing our type of business. We have a monopoly on it. Ever since the YouTube era started every band needs someone who is putting the music on YouTube and sharing it with the world.

RC: What are you most proud of about your company?

LF: I really like the rate at which we are growing. We have never been stagnant at any point. It always feels like things are getting better. I learn new things everyday, and I love having other passionate people working with me.

RC: Is there anything else you would like to tell readers about your startup?

LF: Eventually we will be moving to Atlanta, but I think Athens is the place to start. I want everyone to hear about Consume Media. Like us on Facebook!
