Founders’ Fridays: John Posey, Products for Robots

Hey Rachael here again! Today’s featured Friday founder is John Posey III from Products for Robots.  We talked about topics like how he came up with the name for his startup and the challenge of being taken seriously.

Founder: John Posey

Company Name: Products for Robots

RP: Tell me a little bit about your startup:

JP: We’re an entertainment developer focused on creating quality entertainment revolving around our own original intellectual properties. We have made animated shorts, graphic novels, video games, board games, table-top games, soundtracks and software just to name a few examples of the mediums we use to create.

RP: What motivated you to get started?

JP: I have always wanted to do this. When I was a growing up I would make up games and stories for my cousins and I to act out as we pretended to be the characters in the stories or games. I have always felt out of place sitting in the classroom or working traditional jobs- like there was this void inside me that couldn’t be filled. Then one day I just said fuck it all and decided to put the rubber to the road and just do it. Almost nine years later I am here running my own company finally bringing to life all my dreams.

RP: Why did you decide to name your startup Products for Robots?

JP: I was sitting in Taco Bell with one of my best friends Luke Bennett a long time ago and we were trying to think of something to call my company. I love robots a lot, and we are making things, so therefore Products for Robots was born. It has kind of a double entendre because I believe people are robots and we make things for people. We make video games and digital things which are used by machines which are robots.

RP: What has been your biggest challenge in the process of building Products for Robots?

JP: Keeping my head high and not letting all the negativity and nay-sayers get to me.

RP: Is there something you wish you knew now that you didn’t know at the beginning?

JP: How difficult it is to get people to believe in you and take you seriously. People are so jaded now-a-days, it is so sad.

RP: What would you say to someone who is considering building their own startup?

JP: Never give up and don’t be afraid to fail, because failure is necessary in the path to success.

RP: Where do you see Products for Robots being in the next year?

JP: On top of the world.

RP: What were you doing before you came up with the idea of your startup?

JP: Floating around searching for something that would fill this void I felt inside me.

RP: Are you from Athens? Do you plan on staying here?

JP: I moved here in the sixth grade from Greensboro, NC. Oh yeah definitely, this town is apocalypse ready.

RP: What is your favorite thing to do when you are not working?

JP: Crushing hard at the local bouldering gym, Active Climbing.

RP: What is one word that you think best describes your personality?

JP: Creative

RP: What is your biggest strength? Weakness?

JP: My relentless drive for greatness.  My relentless drive for greatness.

RP: Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about Products for Robots?

JP: We are a team of passionate and creative individuals relentlessly following our dreams no matter what the costs. So expect great things on the horizon.
